Austin’s EmPOWERED to Serve: Eliminating Mental Health Disparities and More

During the pandemic, several people have expressed mental health stressors like losing loved ones, sickness, and unemployment. Minorities are affected the most and disproportionately experience these misfortunes. In fact, people of color are more likely to experience poor educational outcomes, higher unemployment, and poAustin’s EmPOWERED to Serve: Eliminating Mental Health Disparities and Moreverty, which adds to the list of health stressors. Because a lack of access to crucial mental health services exists, communities of color face additional geographic and financial barriers to receiving the help they need.

Austin’s EmPOWERED to Serve

What can we do to tackle these barriers? As passionate individuals, we can come together to drive change through health justice and empowerment in our communities. The community members of Austin and their voices are very important to drive improved life outcomes. Therefore, Austin’s EmPOWERED to Serve platform, inspired by American Heart Association volunteers to address the barriers and accelerate solutions to drive the elimination of health disparities in under-resourced communities, is being launched this November.

Become an Agent of Change in the Community

Localized solutions are important, especially when it comes to mental health disparities and emotional well-being. In fact, the emotional well-being status of an individual not only affects the individual’s mental health but is also associateAustin’s EmPOWERED to Serve: Eliminating Mental Health Disparities and Mored with chronic conditions that are risk factors for heart disease and stroke. These risk factors include poor diet, high blood pressure, high body mass index, high cholesterol, and high blood glucose levels (indicator of diabetes). Through Austin’s EmPOWERED to Serve, we can drive change through health justice and empowerment in communities to better mental and physical health outcomes. By evaluating our communities while supporting and promoting the environmental, social, and economic conditions, is one of the first steps towards driving localized changes to Austin’s community members.

  • Advocate for people living in under-resourced communities, and
  • Develop programs and resources that will have a lasting impact on these communities.
